Member countries in the EU are beginning to put pressure on the US to come clean regarding the alledged kidnappings and secret prisons in third party countries. How much is smoke and mirrors will remain to be seen. By most reports the EU seems to be grudgingly asking the US for more information. I suspect they are rightly a little afraid as if the US admit to these sort of activity it is bound to come back and bite the EU as somewhere in their govts someone must have known what was happening and either assisted, or at least turned a blind eye. “Democracy is rather fragile in these Eastern European countries” accused of hosting the illegal jails, points out Guillaume Parmentier, head of the French Center on the U.S., a think tank in Paris that promotes trans-Atlantic ties. “It makes the Americans look exceptionally hypocritical to say that democracy should be spread everywhere and then encourage their allies to do things outside the rule of law.”
