So after 3 or 4 months of laptops exploding around the world Dell has finally issued a battery recall in conjunction with some Consumer Safety Commission. The recall is somewhere in the vicinity of 4 million units. Yes you read correctly 4 million units. Making it the largest recall in the history of consumer electronics.

This supersedes the the previous recall for faulty batteries that was in the thousands. I have no idea how they will go about handling the collection and re-distribution of replacements – and lets no even wonder what will be happening to all the toxic lithium that must needs be disposed of. The upshot is that anyone with shares in a lithium mine with be laughing all the way to the bank I guess.
Unfortunately for the RIAA demons, it appears that many of these batteries were contracted out to Sony to manufacture so it could end up that Sony products are also affected. That will give Sony something to think about instead of taking dead people to court for pirating MP3’s.
