The leaders (?) in personal transport, Segway, have released details of their two new models, the i2 and the x2. If you are unfamiliar with Segway they are the folks who developed a stand-up, electric, essentially gyro assisted, personal transport, the Segway, a few years back.
The i2 is a revamp of the existing Segeway, with the x2 a more rugged ‘off road’ device. I don’t know really just how off road it would be, but as they zip along at 20kph and can handle all sorts of sharp turns (including pivoting on the spot) with their new lean technology they would certainly be worth a look.

Their battery life is reported to be enough to get you 40kms on normal (sealed?) terrain, and half that around 20kms in ‘offroad’ conditions.
As an alternative to carbon emitting combustion engine beasties, the time may well be ripe for Segway to make a real impact on personal transport alternatives. Besides every ipod wearing, mac using, VW driving cliche will be looking for the next think to sport their funky designer threads
With the price tag of $5000 for the i2 they are even ‘affordable’ I guess. Not bad for an electric car alternative that won’t be able to be recalled.
